- Artist Statement

My work over the past few years has been comprised of paintings which delve into the subjects of humanity and nature, and combine the two concepts. As a medium, I choose to use oil paint on either canvas or wood panel. I find that the oil paint creates a luster that I desire in my work, and enables me to create dark, rich colors and textures. In my artwork, darkness and the macabre have always been present. To me, they are seductive attitudes and themes that beg for intense visual statements.

In my life I have been influenced not only by the surreal artists such as Salvador Dali and Magritte, but also by artists such as Caravaggio, Michelangelo, and Durer. Post Impressionism has also influenced me in a stylistic way. For this reason, I am passionate about paintings by Sargent and Cassatt. Their brush strokes are magical in the way they can shape and define an object. However, more appealing to my darker side, I admire artists such as HR Giger and Cindy Sherman for their ability to engender a feeling of beauty in the grotesque.

I enjoy creating a dichotomy between religion, feminine pin-up poses, and taboo subject matter such as alternative lifestyles. My most recent work is composed as metaphorical figurative paintings using contemporary decorative elements. Inspired by forty's style pin up girls and flash tattoo art, my work combines contemporary style with Renaissance subject matter. Stylistically, my paintings are bold, dynamic, graphic, and telling. I use embellishments that are of an urban motif such as lustrous fabrics, tiles, and metallic street-style studs.

As a generally quiet person, my goal is to create pieces that expose a louder side of me. I feel that my most recent paintings accomplish this goal, as well as exposing a more personal aspect of my life. In future projects I would like to continue to fuse Renaissance themes with contemporary aesthetics. My ambition is to extract the provocative side of my personal character, which is represented through combining biblical tradition with contemporary female roles.
